Former ski jump champion Adam Malysz was bruised in a car crash shortly after setting a speed record in Poland. Malysz was driving at about 180 kph (111 mph) at a test range near the western town of Zagan on Thursday when his SUV skidded and landed on its roof. Malysz got out on his own and was smiling, according to TVN24 television.

Two-time Olympic cross country skiing champion Andrus Veerpalu of Estonia has been banned for three years for doping with human growth hormone. The International Ski Federation says its doping panel ruled the 40-year-old Veerpalu is ineligible to compete or take part in any official event until Feb. 23, 2014 -- the final day of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

^ Utah law enforcement officers have released the 911 tape in which Olympic silver medalist Jeret "Speedy" Peterson tells a dispatcher he's about to kill himself. The U.S. freestyle skier made the call Monday shortly before shooting himself in a canyon near Salt Lake City. He was arrested in Idaho for drunken driving three days before his death.

The International Ski Federation has passed a new rule requiring Alpine racers to use longer skis to help prevent serious injuries. Giant slalom skiers will face the biggest changes in the 2012-13 World Cup season. The rules are being imposed after a six-year injury research project. FIS says the minimum length for men's GS skis will increase by 10 centimeters to 1.95 meters.

Trade group: US resorts see record skier visits (AP) 20/07/2011 11:59
The National Ski Areas Association says a ski season that stretched into July helped U.S. resorts set a record this year for skier visits. The Lakewood, Colo.-based trade group in May estimated there were 60.1 million skier visits at U.S. resorts this season. Based on final survey results, the association says resorts finished the season with 60.54 million skier visits.
